New health care bill may affect St. Joe's grads

Health care reform, which passed into law on March 23, 2010, will allow young people to stay on their parents’ health insurance policies until age 26, beginning six months after enactment. Prior to the reform bill, depending on their state of residence, most young adults were required to seek their own health insurance coverage once they turned 19 or were no longer full-time students.

Parent collapses, dies during move out

The father of a Saint Joseph’s University freshman died on May 7 during move-out procedures in McShain Hall. According to sources close to the situation, Dennis R. Baize had been feeling ill throughout the day. In the process of helping his son Sean Michael Baize move out of the residence hall, he passed out on a bench.

The tossing of Frisbees, baseballs, and footballs on Gest Lawn has long been a staple of springtime on Hawk Hill. The large field at the corners of City and Cardinal Avenues has played host to graduations, concerts, barbeques, and countless student functions for over four decades.

But activities like ball playing were once so condemned on this land that its owner added several feet of serrated concrete block to the existing high stone walls that reached 40 feet, just to keep errant balls from the campus from entering her garden.
